Training targets for this year

Since January I’ve been focusing on three main targets. As we’re well into July, I thought this would be a good time to review any progress made.

1. Back to basics – I’ve been working on my core of kihon, keeping it limited to single techniques.  Various supplementary training in flexibility and plyometrics has really helped develop more fluid technique. Although I feel some of my stances (esp. Kokutsu-dachi) have dipped a  bit.

2. Tokui-Kata: Nijushiho.  Regular videotaping of my performance has really helped to identify little niggles.  This has been enhanced by the introduction of certain stretches which complement Nijushiho in particular.

3. Jyu Kumite: A number of drills have been incorporated into by daily personal training. This has definitely helped me move with more assurance when attacking. I’ve also introduced many applications from Nijushiho into my training – especially with regards to defensive techniques (blocking and taisabaki). This has borne fruit with several of my sparring partners getting snarled up in them. I probably need to integrate this further into a shadow boxing drill to help make them even more natural.
